la-crop-weather State Louisiana Crop Weather Week Ending Date September 4, 2005 Days suitable for fieldwork: 6.0 Soil moisture supplies: 26% very short, 36% short, 35% adequate and 3% surplus Field Crops Report The majority of Louisiana was spared from hurricane Katrina. The central and northern portions of the state received little to no rain. Wind damage was the biggest concern for most producers. Producers were busy harvesting crops throughout the week. Harvesting of cotton began last week. Rice producers were flooding and fertilizing harvested fields, preparing for a second crop. Some sugarcane was slightly damaged due to lodging. Sugarcane producers continued planting. Fruits, Vegetables, and Specialty Crops Report Citrus producers were scouting for insects. Vegetable producers continued planting fall crops. Livestock, Pasture, and Range Report Cattlemen were busy cutting hay and marketing spring born calves. Cattlemen were also beginning preparations for winter pasture.
