la-crop-weather State Louisiana Crop Weather Week Ending Date November 13, 2005 Days suitable for fieldwork: 6.9 Soil moisture supplies: 60% very short, 35% short and 5% adequate Field Crops Report Hot and dry conditions persisted throughout the week. Soil moisture continued to be extremely low. Some cotton and soybean producers were preparing fields for next year. Rice producers continued holding off on fall field preparations due to salty soils. A few rice producers were harvesting their second crop. Sugarcane harvesting continued with reports of good sugar but light tonnage. Downed sugarcane and debris from hurricanes in fields continued to be a problem for some. Dry conditions slowed winter wheat planting. Rain was needed to help planted wheat emerge. Fruits, Vegetables, and Specialty Crops Report Crawfish producers continued flooding ponds. Citrus producers were selling satsumas. Sweet potatoes harvest edged closer to completion. Producers were hoping for more rain to improve vegetable conditions. Harvesting of pecans remained on track with last year and the 5 year average. Livestock, Pasture, and Range Report Pasture conditions continued to decline because of dry weather, but sixty percent of livestock conditions were reported as fair to excellent. Cattlemen were hoping for more rain to germinate ryegrass seed.
