United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service Michigan Field Office Cooperating with Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Vol. 33 No. 3 Agriculture Across Michigan March 2012 2011 Crop Values Summary The preliminary farm value of Michigan field crops and vegetables produced in 2011 was approximately $4.51 billion. Fruit and nut crops are not included in this total. Due to program changes necessitated by the 2011 Federal budget, fruit and nut crop value will not be published until February 2013. Some Michigan highlights from the report follow: * Corn for grain value increased 15.7 percent to $2.03 billion in 2011; the average price increased $0.49 per bushel. * Soybean value at $990 million was up 0.5 percent from 2010. The average price was up $0.50 per bushel. * Hay value was $283 million, up 1.7 percent from a year earlier; the average price was up $0.50 per ton. * Wheat value increased 67.3 percent to $342 million; the average price was up $0.98 per bushel. * Dry bean value, at $154 million, was up 15 percent from last year, while the average price was up $14.20 per cwt. * Nationally: * U.S. corn for grain value increased 18.3 percent to $76.5 billion in 2011. * Soybean value in the U.S. was down 4.7 percent to $35.8 billion. Some Michigan highlights were: corn $6.00 per bushel, up $0.03 from January and up $0.15 from last year; soybeans $12.10 per bushel, up $0.40 from last month; milk $18.80 per cwt, down $1.00 from last month, and down $0.40 from last year. U.S. preliminary All Farm Products Index of Prices Received by Farmers in February, at 180 percent, based on 1990-1992=100, decreased 8 points (4.3 percent) from January. The Crop Index is down 8 points (3.8 percent) but the Livestock Index increased 1 point (0.6 percent). Producers received lower prices for milk, strawberries, celery, and lettuce and higher prices for soybeans, corn, broilers, and hogs. In addition to prices, the overall index is also affected by the seasonal change based on a 3-year average mix of commodities producers sell. Increased monthly movement of cattle, milk, broilers, and hogs offset the decreased marketing of corn, soybeans, wheat, and cotton. The preliminary All Farm Products Index is up 9 points (5.3 percent) from February 2011. The Food Commodities Index, at 167, decreased 5 points (2.9 percent) from last month but increased 4 points (2.5 percent) from February 2011. Michigan Trout Production The value of all trout sold and distributed in Michigan was $831,000 of trout in 2011. This is up 8 percent from last year. Trout 12 inches or longer had sales of 214,000 pounds with an average liveweight of 1.0 pounds per fish. Sales of trout 12 inches or longer were valued at $599,000 for an average value of $2.80 per pound. Trout between 6 and 12 inches had sales of 45,000 pounds with an average liveweight of 0.4 pounds per fish. Sales of trout between 6 and 12 inches were valued at $180,000 for an average value of $4.00 per pound. Trout between 1 and 6 inches had sales of 4,000 pounds with an average liveweight of 40 pounds per 1,000 fish. Sales of trout between 1 and 6 inches were valued at $52,000 for an average value of $520 per 1,000 fish. Losses of trout in Michigan amounted to 227,000 fish, weighing 42,000 pounds. January Milk Production Dairy herds in Michigan produced 731 million pounds of milk during January, up 2.8 percent from a year ago. The daily rate per cow was 63.5 pounds, up 0.3 pounds from January 2011. The dairy herd was estimated at 371,000 head for January, up 8,000 from a year earlier. The value per head of all chickens, excluding commercial broilers, was $2.40, an increase of 4 percent from a year ago. February's stocks represent 31 percent of the total production, down 20 percent from last year's 5.9 million cwt. Stocks by type were 84 percent round white and 16 percent russet. Stocks include potatoes stored by both processors and growers. Michigan disappearance of this year's crop, from harvest to February 1, 2012, totaled 10.48 million cwt. Disappearance from last year's crop during the comparable time period was 9.76 million cwt. Disappearance includes sales, shrink, and waste. Michigan Farm Numbers The estimated number of farms in Michigan in 2011 was 54,900. Land in farms was estimated to be 10.0 million acres, unchanged from last year. Tee average size farm in Michigan was 182 acres per farm, also unchanged from 2010. The number of farms in the United States in 2011 is estimated at 2.2 million, down fractionally from 2010. Total land in farms, at 917 million acres, decreased 1.9 million acres from 2010. The average farm size was 420 acres, up 1 acre from the previous year.
