United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service Michigan Field Office Cooperating with Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Vol. 33 No. 7 Agriculture Across Michigan July 2012 Michigan Acreage Summary Field crop planting progressed without incident in 2012, largely helped by an earlier than normal spring. Corn planting was completed by the end of May and soybean planting was completed by mid-June, nearly 2 weeks earlier than normal. Spring moisture was adequate for seed germination, however warmer than normal conditions in late June coupled with lower than normal rainfall has stressed crops. Highlights of the 2012 June Acreage report follow: Michigan corn growers planted 2.6 million acres, up 100,000 acres from what was planted in 2011, and unchanged from the March Intentions report. Harvested acres of corn for grain are anticipated to be 2.29 million acres. June 1 Grain Stocks On June 1, 2012, Michigan corn stocks totaled 88.7 million bushels, 7 percent higher than a year earlier. About 52 percent of the corn was stored on farms. The third quarter disappearance was 63.6 million bushels, compared with 58.5 million bushels a year earlier. Soybean stocks on June 1, 2012, were 21.1 million bushels. That was 25 percent higher than stocks a year earlier. The third quarter indicated disappearance was 20.4 million bushels, compared with 16.8 million bushels during the same period in 2011. Farm stocks of soybeans were 5.1 million bushels. Wheat stocks on June 1, 2012, were 25.0 million bushels, 18 percent above year ago. Approximately 98 percent of wheat stocks were in commercial storage. Fourth quarter indicated disappearance was 11.4 million bushels, compared with 9.5 million bushels during the same period last year. Biotechnology Varieties The use of biotechnology varieties for corn decreased slightly in Michigan from last year. Biotechnology varieties accounted for 86 percent of the corn acres planted in Michigan, down from 87 percent last year. Soybean plantings included 91 percent biotechnology varieties, unchanged from last year. Nationally, biotechnology varieties of corn totaled 88 percent of the acres planted, unchanged from 2011. Soybeans acreage planted to biotech varieties fell 1 percent to 93 percent. The following table is based on responses from the June Agricultural Survey. Herbicide resistant varieties include only those developed using biotechnology. Conventionally bred herbicide resistant varieties were excluded from the survey. Insect resistant varieties include only those containing Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). Stacked gene varieties include only those containing biotech traits for both herbicide and insect resistance. This inventory of commercial fruit farms was conducted by the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. There were 360 peach farms at the end of the 2011 season, down from 440 in 2006. There were 4,000 acres of peaches at the conclusion of 2011, down 800 acres since 2006. There were 680 acres of peaches planted from 2007 through 2011. The top two counties in peach acres, Oceana and Berrien, accounted for 67 percent of all acres. About 36 percent of the peach acres were non-melting flesh varieties, which are used principally for processing. That percentage was down slightly from 37 percent at the end of 2006. All tables on peaches are available through the NASS home page at www.nass.usda.gov. Select Michigan under Statistics by State to access the Michigan internet page. Record high temperatures in early spring led to premature development. This was followed by below normal temperatures and continual frost events throughout the state. Additionally, pollination conditions were poor. The majority of growers lost their entire harvestable crop this year. The atypical spring weather also destroyed most of the sweet cherry crop. The Michigan sweet cherry forecast is 3,300 tons, down from 18,600 tons produced in 2011. The harvest is already complete in southern Michigan. The U.S. tart cherry production forecast is 73.1 million pounds, down 68 percent from the 2011 production. Washington growers expect to produce 27.0 million pounds of tart cherries in 2012, up 29 percent from 2011. The Utah production forecast is 34.0 million pounds, down 3 percent from 2011. The U.S. sweet cherry production forecast is 382,150 tons, up 11 percent from 343,115 tons in 2011. The Washington forecast of 235,000 tons is up 18 percent from 2011 production. The California and Oregon forecasts are 85,000 and 53,000 tons, respectively. Small Grain Forecast, July 1 Michigan's 2012 winter wheat production is forecast at 38.9 million bushels. This report is based on current conditions, as of July 1, 2012. Some highlights of the Crop Production Report are as follows: The Michigan winter wheat yield is forecast at 72 bushels per acre, the same as the previous month. Winter wheat harvest was in full swing, a full two weeks earlier than normal. Condition was 53 percent good to excellent, 36 percent fair, and 11 percent poor to very poor as of July 2. Oat yield in Michigan is forecast at 64 bushels per acre, unchanged from last year. Oats progressed well ahead of normal, due to above normal temperatures. Condition was 53 percent good to excellent, 35 percent fair, and 12 percent poor to very poor as of July 2.
