United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service Michigan Field Office Cooperating with Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Vol. 33 No. 9 Agriculture Across Michigan September 2012 Michigan September Crop Production The start of August found much of the Nation’s corn crop past the critical pollination stage, as warm, sunny weather throughout the growing season promoted rapid phenological development. This report is based on conditions as of September 1, 2012. Some highlights of the Crop Production Report are as follows: * Michigan corn farmers expect a yield of 114 bushels per acre, down 39 bushels from 2011. * Soybean production in the State is expected to total 73.6 million bushels down 14 percent from a year earlier. The yield forecast, 37 bushels per acre, down 7 bushel from 2011. * Sugarbeet producers estimate a yield of 28 tons per acre, up 4 tons from 2011. * Nationally, corn production is forecast at 10.7 billion bushels, down less than 1 percent from the August forecast and down 13 percent from 2011. This represents the lowest production in the United States since 2006. Based on conditions as of September 1, yields are expected to average 122.8 bushels per acre, down 0.6 bushel from the August forecast and 24.4 bushels below the 2011 average. If realized, this will be the lowest average yield since 1995. Area harvested for grain is forecast at 87.4 million acres, unchanged from the August forecast but up 4 percent from 2011. Red Meat Production Commercial red meat production in Michigan totaled 41.9 million pounds in July, up 0.8 million pounds from July 2011. The average live weight was up 23 pounds from the previous year, at 1,295 pounds. Veal production totaled 9.5 million pounds, 6 percent below July a year ago. Calf slaughter totaled 67,500 head, down 8 percent from July 2011. The average live weight was down 4 pounds from last year, at 241 pounds. Pork production totaled 1.72 billion pounds, up 5 percent from the previous year. Hog slaughter totaled 8.57 million head, up 5 percent from July 2011. The average live weight was up 1 pound from the previous year, at 269 pounds. Lamb and mutton production, at 12.5 million pounds, was up 14 percent from July 2011. Sheep slaughter totaled 178,600 head, 9 percent above last year. The average live weight was 140 pounds, up 7 pounds from July a year ago. January to July 2012 commercial red meat production was 28.2 billion pounds, up 1 percent from 2011. Accumulated beef production was down 1 percent from last year, veal was down 8 percent, pork was up 3 percent from last year, and lamb and mutton production was up 3 percent. "Higher grain prices continue to be supported by the drought;" Michigan highlights were: August corn at $7.95 per bushel, is up $0.32 from July and up $0.73 from last year; August soybeans at $15.90 per bushel, is up $0.40 from last month and up $2.60 from last year; August milk at $18.20 per cwt, is up $1.10 from last month, and down $5.00 from last year. U.S. All Farm Products Index of Prices Received by Farmers in August, at 192 percent, based on 1990-1992=100, increased 2 points (1.1 percent) from July. The Crop Index is up 3 points (1.3 percent) and the Livestock Index increased 3 points (2.0 percent). Producers received higher prices for corn, milk, eggs and soybeans. Lower prices were received for hogs, onions, potatoes, and carrots. In addition to prices, the overall index is also affected by the seasonal change based on a 3-year average mix of commodities producers sell. Increased monthly movement of cattle, barley, sweet corn, and calves offset the decreased marketing of wheat, hay, corn, and strawberries. The preliminary All Farm Products Index is up 8 points (4.3 percent) from August 2011. The Food Commodities Index, at 177, increased 1 point (0.6 percent) from last month and increased 3 points (1.7 percent) from August 2011. The August Index of Prices Paid for Commodities and Services, Interest, Taxes, and Farm Wage Rates (PPITW) is 216 percent of the 1990-1992 average. The index is up 3 points (1.4 percent) from July and 11 points (5.4 percent) above August 2011. The information, which is available online, includes average rental rates for irrigated and non-irrigated cropland, and pastureland during the 2012 calendar year. The information is based on data NASS gathered from over 200,000 agricultural producers nationwide during the 2012 county level cash rents survey. There were 5,604 producers sampled in Michigan during the 2012 county level cash rents survey. In counties that are unpublished, NASS did not receive enough survey responses to publish a reliable estimate. In these instances, the rental values are combined with those of other unpublished counties and included in the "other county total" within the district. The 2012 county cash rental rates data for cropland and pasture for Michigan and all other states are available online. Egg production totaled 292 million eggs, up 15 percent from last year. The rate of lay during July was 2,508 eggs per 100 layers. On August 1 in the East North Central Region, which includes Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Wisconsin, there were 7.1 million egg-type eggs in incubators, up 10 percent from a year earlier. In the same region, there were 12.6 million broiler-type eggs in incubators, down 3 percent from the previous year. There were 25.6 million turkey poults hatched in the U.S. in July, up 3 percent from 2011. The estimated production of processing snap beans under contract increased 19 percent to 62,300 tons. Hot and dry weather throughout June and July caused some green beans to abort their flowers, particularly on early plantings, but by early August, plants with mature pods were flowering again. Tomato processors contracted 3,400 acres in Michigan for 2012, a decrease of 100 acres from the previous year. Processing tomato production is forecast at 115,600 tons, up 10 percent from 2011. Tomato planting finished by late June, with staking and tying continuing into early July. By mid-July, tomatoes were bearing fruit, but excessive hot and dry conditions caused fruit to ripen faster than normal. In addition, high soil temperatures under plastic stunted root growth. Cool, cloudy, and wet conditions in early August were expected to cause decreases in fruit quality and yields Michigan's asparagus production totaled 191,000 hundredweight (cwt) in 2012, down 12 percent from the previous year. The area harvested for fresh market and processing was 9,100 acres, down 700 acres from 2011. Yield, at 21 cwt per acre, was down 1 cwt per acre from the previous year. Total value of Michigan's asparagus production was $17.28 million, down less than 1 percent from 2011. Warm weather in March sparked early crop development, but multiple frost events in April followed by hot and dry weather in May and June resulted in lost fields. Asparagus harvest was complete by mid-June in the southwest, but continued through late June in the west central region.
