United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service Michigan Field Office Cooperating with Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Vol. 33 No. 10 Agriculture Across Michigan October 2012 September 1 Grain Stocks On September 1, 2012, Michigan corn stocks totaled 24.7 million bushels, 3 percent lower than a year earlier. About 53 percent of the corn was stored on farms. The fourth quarter disappearance was 63.6 million bushels, compared with 57.2 million bushels a year earlier. Soybean stocks on September 1, 2012, were 3.9 million bushels. That was 30 percent lower than stocks a year earlier. The fourth quarter indicated disappearance was 17.2 million bushels, compared with 11.2 million bushels during the same period in 2011. Farm stocks of soybeans were 0.9 million bushels. Wheat stocks on September 1, 2012, were 38.8 million bushels, 27 percent below a year ago. Approximately 93 percent of wheat stocks were in commercial storage. First quarter indicated disappearance was 27.1 million bushels, compared with 18.8 million bushels during the same period last year. Small Grain Production Michigan wheat producers have established a State record yield for the second consecutive year. However, production was down 20 percent from last year's record level, due to significantly reduced acreage. Some highlights of the Small Grains Summary are as follows: Wheat yield, at 76 bushels per acre, was up one bushel from 2011's record setting crop. Harvested acres were down 140,000 acres from 2011. Production was 41.04 million bushels, down 20 percent from last year. Planting began in mid-September and was completed by mid-November. Wheat plantings were delayed or prevented due to a wetter than normal fall. There was little snow cover in most southern parts of the State for most of the winter, but warmer than normal temperatures prevented frost and freeze loss. Spring-like weather arrived in March which allowed wheat to begin growth earlier than normal. Timely rains early in the season put wheat on a positive trajectory. Hot, dry temperatures in June largely prevented wheat disease. Harvest began two weeks earlier than normal. Harvest progressed uneventfully and wheat grain quality was excellent. Harvest was complete by mid-July, much earlier than normal. Oat yield, at 60 bushels per acre, was down 4 bushels from last year. Harvested acreage, at 35,000, was up 5,000 acres from 2011. Production was up 9.3 percent due to increased acreage. Oat planting began in late March, much earlier than normal, due to an early spring warm up. Oat planting was largely complete by late April, though some growers, especially those in the northern reaches of the State did not complete planting until late May. Oats were headed by early June and harvest began in early July. Yields were hindered due to lack of rain beginning in June. Harvest was complete by mid-August, much earlier than normal. Barley yield at 48 bushels per acre, was unchanged from last year. Growers harvested 9,000 acres up 1,000 from last year. Barley production increased 12.5 percent from 2011. Barley growers generally benefitted from the same weather patterns that aided wheat producers. Seventy-seven percent of sales were sold to the wholesale market while 19 percent was sold directly to the retail market. The remaining 4 percent was sold directly to consumers. Organic field crop sales were the largest commodity group and accounted for $35.3 million in sales. The remaining top five commodity groups in order of sales were vegetables at $4.3 million, fruit and nuts (excluding apples and grapes) at $1.8 million, apples at $1.5 million, and berries at $0.7 million. Some commodity groups were not published to avoid disclosure of individual operations. California was the number one state in organic sales with $1.4 billion followed by Washington ($297.1 million) and Oregon ($233.5 million). The remaining top eight organic producing states were Texas, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, New York, and Michigan.
