United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service Michigan Field Office Cooperating with Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Vol. 33 No. 11 Agriculture Across Michigan November 2012 USDA to Determine 2012 Crop Yields As farmers wrap up the 2012 growing season, the USDA will conduct three major surveys to determine 2012 crop acreage and yields, as well as, hog inventories. These three surveys, the 2012 Row Crops County Agricultural Production Survey (CAPS), the December Agricultural Survey, and the December Hog Report, will be used to establish final 2012 crop acreage, yield, and production estimates, as well as, winter wheat and rye seedings, grain stocks, and hog inventories and farrowings. Estimates of acreage, yield, and production of corn, soybeans, and dry beans by county will also be set using the data farmers provide on these surveys. The USDA will contact approximately 4,000 Michigan farmers and ask them to provide their 2012 acreage and production data. Each report is critical to ensure data reliability. Most selected farmers will receive a questionnaire in the mail. Those not responding by mail, will receive a follow up telephone call or personal visit. Producers receiving questionnaires in the mail are encouraged to complete and return the questionnaire promptly. Completing the surveys on the internet is also an option for all three surveys. Individual reports from farmers are kept confidential and are summarized to set county, state, and national estimates of crop production. The Hogs and Pigs report based on the December Hog survey will be released Friday, December 28 at 3:00 pm Eastern. The Crop Production, Grain Stocks, and Winter Wheat Seedings reports based on the December Agricultural Survey will be released Friday, January 11 at 12:00 pm Eastern. Please note that reports previously issued at 8:30 am Eastern will now be released at Noon. County level estimates for oats and wheat will be available on December 13 at 3:00 pm and in late February 2013 for corn and soybeans. If you have questions about the surveys or releases, contact the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office at 1-800-453-7501. September Milk Production Dairy herds in Michigan produced 705 million pounds of milk during September, up 2.8 percent from a year ago. The daily rate per cow was 62.8 pounds, up 0.5 pounds from September 2011. The dairy herd was estimated at 374,000 head for September, up 7,000 from a year earlier. Planted acres, at 47,500, increased 2,500 acres from last year. Harvested acres, at 46,000, was up 2,000 acres from 2011. Average yield, forecasted at 355 cwt per acre, was 10 cwt higher than the previous year. The first potato stocks estimate for the 2012 crop year will be released December 14, 2012. Nationally, production of fall potatoes for 2012 is forecast at 422 million cwt, up 8 percent from 2011. Area harvested, at 991,500 acres, is slightly above the previous forecast and 6 percent above the 2011 estimate. The average yield forecast, at 426 cwt per acre, is up 10 cwt per acre from a year ago. In Idaho, growing conditions were favorable, leading to a yield that, if realized, will be the highest on record. Total potato production is forecast to be the second highest on record. Record high yields are also forecast in North Dakota where the potato crop benefitted from favorable spring weather and adequate water supplies. In Michigan, growers reported good yields despite the high temperatures and dry conditions experienced during the summer. Some Michigan highlights were: October corn at $7.05 per bushel, is up $0.13 from September and up $1.25 from last year; October soybeans at $14.00 per bushel, is up $0.50 from last month and up $2.40 from last year; October milk at $21.20 per cwt, is up $1.50 from last month, and up $0.10 from last year. The U.S. preliminary All Farm Products Index of Prices Received by Farmers in October, at 210 percent, based on 1990-1992=100, increased 17 points (8.8 percent) from September. The Crop Index is up 15 points (6.7 percent) but the Livestock Index increased 4 points (2.6 percent). Producers received higher prices for milk, hogs, grapes and corn and lower prices for eggs, apples, lettuce, and soybeans. In addition to prices, the overall index is also affected by the seasonal change based on a 3-year average mix of commodities producers sell. Increased monthly movement of soybeans, corn, grain sorghum, and cottonseed offset the decreased marketing of wheat, milk, cattle, and grapes. The October Index of Prices Paid for Commodities and Services, Interest, Taxes, and Farm Wage Rates (PPITW) is 220 percent of the 1990-1992 average. The index is up 2 points (0.9 percent) from September and 15 points (7.3 percent) above October 2011. Higher prices in October for complete feeds, concentrates, nitrogen, and feeder cattle offset lower prices for mixed fertilizer, supplements, gasoline, and diesel. This report is based on conditions as of November 1, 2012. Some highlights of the Crop Production Report follow: * Corn yield was up 2 bushels from last month's projection of 118 bushels per acre. Corn for grain harvested acres was 2.34 million acres. The Michigan corn crop was 67 percent harvested as of November 1. * Soybean yield at 42.0 bushels per acre was up 3 bushels from last month's forecast. As of November 1, harvest was about 50 percent complete, behind average. * U.S. corn production is forecast at 10.7 billion bushels, up slightly from the October forecast but down 13 percent from 2011. This represents the lowest production in the United States since 2006. Based on conditions as of November 1, yields are expected to average 122.3 bushels per acre, up 0.3 bushel from the October forecast but 24.9 bushels below the 2011 average. If realized, this will be the lowest average yield since 1995. Area harvested for grain is forecast at 87.7 million acres, unchanged from the October forecast and up 4 percent from 2011. * U.S. soybean production is forecast at 2.97 billion bushels, up 4 percent from October but down 4 percent from last year. Based on November 1 conditions, yields are expected to average 39.3 bushels per acre, up 1.5 bushels from last month but down 2.6 bushels from last year. Compared with last month, yield forecasts are higher or unchanged across all States except for Oklahoma and Texas. Area for harvest in the United States is forecast at 75.7 million acres, unchanged from October and up 3 percent from last year.
