United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service Michigan Field Office Cooperating with Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Vol. 34 No. 1 Agriculture Across Michigan January 2013 Michigan Annual Crop Summary Drier than normal conditions hindered crop production in Michigan in 2012. An earlier than normal spring allowed producers to complete planting much earlier than normal. Adequate rains followed planting aiding emergence. Hot, dry weather arrived in late June and persisted throughout the summer. Southern most areas of the State were affected most by lack of rain. Areas in mid-Michigan and the Thumb saw more rainfall which aided yields. Harvest weather was nearly ideal and most growers completed harvest in record time. Highlights of the Crop Production Summary follow: * The corn for grain yield at 133, was down 20 bushels from last year's record of 153. Grain production was 317.9 million bushels. Silage yield at 15.0 tons per acre was down 3 tons per acre from last year. Corn for grain harvest began in late September and wrapped up by late November. * Soybean yield, at 43 bushels per acre, was down 1 bushel per acre from last year. Soybean harvested acres at 1.99 million acres was up 50,000 acres from last year. Production at 85.6 million bushels was up fractionally from 2011. * Sugarbeet yield, at 29 tons per acre, was up 5 tons per acre from 2011. Production at 4.4 million tons was up nearly 21 percent from last year. Both yield and production were record highs. Sugarbeet harvest began on an 'as needed' basis in mid-September and piling began in late October. Harvest was complete by mid-November. * Dry bean production in the State was 3.5 million hundredweight, 4.9 percent higher than last year. Yield per acre at 1,790 pounds, was 210 pounds per acre less than 2011. Yields were harmed by the hot, dry summer weather and also by a very large storm in mid-August that brought excessive amounts of moisture. Some areas in the Saginaw Bay region received in excess of 6 inches of rain from this storm. * Spearmint production in Michigan was 119,000 pounds, down 5.6 percent from the 2011 crop. Spearmint yields averaged 70 pounds per acre, unchanged from last year. Peppermint production was 48,000 pounds, up 4.3 percent from 2011. Peppermint yields averaged 60 pounds per acre, up 2 pounds from last year. * All hay production was 1.85 million tons, down 32.7 percent from 2011. Hay yields were hindered substantially by lack of rain. * Potato production was 15.9 million hundredweight, up 4.9 percent from 2011. The average yield was 350 hundredweight per acre, up 5 from last year. Winter Wheat seeding began in early September and was completed by mid-November. Due to favorable weather conditions in the fall, 72 percent of the crop was rated in good to excellent condition. The U.S. winter wheat seeded area for 2013 is expected to total 41.8 million acres, up 1 percent from 2012. Approximate class acreage breakdowns are: Hard Red Winter, 29.1 million; Soft Red Winter, 9.42 million; and White Winter, 3.27 million. Some Michigan highlights were: December corn at $6.80 per bushel, is up $0.09 from November and up $1.16 from last year; December soybeans at $14.20 per bushel, is up $0.40 from last month and up $3.00 from last year; December milk at $22.20 per cwt, is down $0.20 from last month, but up $1.60 from last year. The U.S. preliminary All Farm Products Index of Prices Received by Farmers in December, at 201 percent, based on 1990-1992=100, decreased 5 points (2.4 percent) from November. The Crop Index is down 8 points (3.4 percent) and the Livestock Index remained unchanged. Producers received lower prices for milk, lettuce, turkeys, and eggs and higher prices soybeans, broilers, cattle, and grapes. In addition to prices, the overall index is also affected by the seasonal change based on a 3-year average mix of commodities producers sell. Increased monthly movement of wheat, milk, broilers, and hay offset decreased marketing of corn, soybeans, cattle, and grapes. The December Index of Prices Paid for Commodities and Services, Interest, Taxes, and Farm Wage Rates (PPITW) is 217 percent of the 1990-1992 average. The index is down 1 point (-0.5 percent) from November but 11 points (5.3 percent) above December 2011. Lower prices in December for concentrates, complete feeds, LP gas, and gasoline more than offset higher prices for feeder pigs, feeder cattle, nitrogen, and potash and phosphate.
