Mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released November 8, 2004 Week Ending Date November 7, 2004 Issue MI-CW4504 Agricultural Summary Rain Delays Four days were suitable for fieldwork during the week ending November 7, according to the USDA-NASS-Michigan Statistical Office. Harvest slogged along as farmers dodged scattered showers for most of the week. Most of the primary crop growing districts received at least an inch of rain over the week. The sporadic and localized heavy rain limited progress and hindered the drydown of corn and soybeans. Temperatures moderated over the week, with averages ranging from normal in the southwest and south central Lower Peninsula to 3 degrees above normal in the western Upper Peninsula. Precipitation amounts ranged from 0.05 inches in the western Upper Peninsula to 1.42 inches in the southwest Lower Peninsula. A farmer in the northwest Lower Peninsula commented, "Field activity has nearly come to a halt, as the wet weather has prohibited most fieldwork." A farmer across the State, in the Thumb, agreed, "Wet conditions have slowed harvest down quite a bit, but we're still plugging away." Field Crops Report Field Crops Rainfall across the State last week slowed field activities. Soil moisture levels were high. Scattered rainfall across the State made soybean harvest difficult. Some farmers were waiting for drier days to start harvesting soybeans. Wheat early plantings looked good, but in some areas wheat planting was put on hold due to soybeans fields not being harvested yet. Corn harvest was ongoing, with moisture levels remaining high. Sugarbeet harvest was winding down. Fruit, Vegetable, and Specialty Crops Report Fruit Most fruit harvest was complete. Fall clean up continued in orchards and vineyards across the State. Vegetables Harvest of the State's vegetables was mostly concluded. Celery harvest wrapped up. Pumpkin picking was essentially finished. A few other late vegetable crops were still being harvested, but were rapidly nearing completion.
