Mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released November 22, 2004 Week Ending Date November 21, 2004 Issue MI-CW4704 Agricultural Summary Warm, Overcast Conditions Four days were suitable for fieldwork during the week ending November 21, according to the USDA-NASS-Michigan Statistical Office. Across the State, temperatures were well above normal over the week. However, most areas experienced extended periods of cloudy, damp weather. Average temperatures ranged from six degrees above normal in the east central Lower Peninsula to 8 degrees above normal in the western Upper Peninsula and northwestern Lower Peninsula. Although precipitation amounts weren't excessive for the week, the overcast skies limited drying. Totals ranged from 0.31 inches in the western Upper Peninsula to 0.74 inches in the eastern Upper Peninsula, with most of the primary crop growing districts receiving at least 0.50 inches. A grower in the southwest commented, "We could use some dry weather again. One more week of it should allow us to finish the soybeans and put a major dent in the remaining corn." A farmer in the west central noted, "Things are slowing down around here. Corn is almost done and Christmas trees are being cut and baled. Some manure has been hauled and orchard trimming continues." Field Crops Report Field Crops Corn and soybean harvest was slowed due to rainy, overcast weather last week. The high moisture content of late planted corn and soybeans continued to delay harvest. Wheat fields look good, but there were reports that plantings were down due to the delayed soybean harvest. Sugarbeet harvest was completed last week. Sugar content was reported as very good. Fruit, Vegetable, and Specialty Crops Report Vegetables A few carrots and squash for processing were still being harvested. Harvest of most other vegetable crops was complete.
