Mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released November 29, 2004 Week Ending Date November 28, 2004 Issue MI-CW4804 Agricultural Summary Snow and Rain Four days were suitable for fieldwork during the week ending November 28, according to the USDA-NASS-Michigan Statistical Office. Many areas of the State were blanketed by their first snowfall just before Thanksgiving. Total accumulations were highly variable, but with rain and moderate temperatures later in the week, most of the snow disappeared fairly quickly. Average temperatures ranged from one degree above normal in the southwest and the south central Lower Peninsula to 3 degrees above normal in the northwest Lower Peninsula. Precipitation totals ranged from 0.56 inches in the central Lower Peninsula to 1.18 inches in the eastern Upper Peninsula and southeast Lower Peninsula. A farmer in the Upper Peninsula commented, "The ground is too greasy for fall tillage. We're working to get corn harvest wrapped up. Other than that, hauling manure and hunting deer." An operator in the Thumb agreed, "Not much happening in the fields. Most fall tillage is complete. A little bit of corn is still in the fields." Field Crops Report Field Crops Continued rain this past week halted most fieldwork, including corn and soybean harvest. Harvest in many fields may have to wait until the ground freezes. Wheat fields continue to look good and there does not seem to be excessive water in the fields from the rains to cause damage. Some farmers still have winter wheat acres to plant. Last Issue for 2004 This concludes the 2004 Crop-Weather season. Reports will resume in late April 2005. Thank you for your interest and cooperation. A special thanks to all of the regular Crop-Weather reporters. Your time and effort made this publication possible and ensured an up-to-date and accurate representation of Michigan agriculture. Thanks again.
