Mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released July 25, 2005 Week Ending Date July 24, 2005 Issue MI-CW3105 Agricultural Summary Rains Varied Across State Five days were suitable for fieldwork during the week ending July 24, according to the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. Precipitation amounts ranged from 0.43 inches in the eastern Upper Peninsula to 1.80 inches in the southeastern Lower Peninsula. Average temperatures ranged from 3 degrees above normal in the western Upper Peninsula and northwest, northeast, west central, east central, and south central Lower Peninsula to 5 degrees above normal in the eastern Upper Peninsula. Precipitation was varied across the State during the week. One farmer in the northeast mentioned, "We received one-half inch of rain. That is the most we have received at one time since June. I don't know what the crops are surviving on, but some of the corn and beans still look pretty good. They won't stay that way if we don't get more rain soon." Another farmer in the south central said, "With all of the rains, the grass is really growing in the pastures and alfalfa fields." Field Crops Report Field Crops Hot, humid conditions continued across the State. Most areas received rainfall, although precipitation amounts varied. Corn growth advanced in humid weather. Corn condition varied, depending on the amount of rainfall received. Some areas reported that stands looked excellent, while others reported dry and wilted conditions. Soybean fields looked good. There was grower concern of white mold in areas that received significant amounts of rainfall. Reports of aphids increased. Sugarbeet fields looked good. Reports of Cercospora leaf spot continued. The second cutting of alfalfa continued. The second cutting was reported as short due to dry conditions. Regrowth for a third cutting improved as precipitation increased. Winter wheat harvest continued. In southern portions of the State, harvest was complete. Grain quality was reported as good. Oat harvest began. High levels of humidity hindered combining. Barley continued to turn yellow. Dry bean growth progressed to bloom in most areas. Fruit, Vegetable, and Specialty Crops Report Fruit In the southwest, Lodi apples were being harvested. In the southeast, apples continued to size well. Apple maggots were still a problem there. Apples continued sizing well in the west central, and the crop looked good. In the northwest, apples were in good condition. Sweet cherry growers in the southwest focused on preventing cherry leaf spot after harvest was complete. In the west central, tart cherry harvest continued in later maturing orchards near Lake Michigan. Quality looked excellent in the west central region. Tart cherries were being harvested in the northwest. Blueberry harvest was progressing rapidly in the southwest. In the southwest, early variety peach harvest continued. Van Buren county reported no peaches due to winter kill. The peach crop looked good in the southeast. In the west central, the peach crop was doing very well. Vegetables Vegetable growers reported that the crops received some much needed rain throughout the State. Cabbage for fall crops continued to be planted. Carrot crops looked excellent especially the irrigated fields. Onions continued to look good. Potato harvest continued in the southwest. Pumpkin plant growth was doing well and in many areas plants continued to flower. Snap bean plantings looked good with harvest underway in some areas. Sweet corn harvest continued with increased volume. Squash, zucchini, and cucumber harvest continued. Tomatoes for processing continued to develop fruit while fresh market harvest started on a limited basis.
