Mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released August 8, 2005 Week Ending Date August 7, 2005 Issue MI-CW3305 Agricultural Summary High Temperatures Return Six days were suitable for fieldwork during the week ending August 7, according to the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. Precipitation amounts ranged from 0.04 inches in the southeast Lower Peninsula to 1.23 inches in the west central Lower Peninsula. Average temperatures ranged from 5 degrees above normal in the northeast, west central, central, east central, southwest, south central, and southeast Lower Peninsula to 8 degrees above normal in the eastern Upper Peninsula. Precipitation was welcomed this past week, but with the warm temperatures, more is needed in many areas. One farmer in the northeast mentioned, "Rains in the first week have eased dry conditions. Second and third cuttings are coming on nicely." Another farmer in the south central said, "Crops are looking good. Hot dry weather is just starting to show signs of stress. A good shower would keep things going in the right direction." Field Crops Report Field Crops Hot, humid weather returned to the State. Precipitation varied, with some areas receiving surplus moisture, while others remained dry. Areas that received sufficient rainfall saw growth in corn. Most fields were tasseling and others were at the dough stage. Reports of corn borer continued, seen mostly in shorter or later planted fields. Soybean fields varied. Many growers reported that the crop was taller than previous years. Damage caused by aphids increased and many fields were sprayed. The second cutting of alfalfa neared completion. A third cutting began in southern areas. Some growers were seeding alfalfa over harvested wheat fields. Winter wheat harvest neared completion. Oat harvest was underway in most areas. Dry bean growth progressed and fields looked good. Most fields were setting pods. Fruit, Vegetable, and Specialty Crops Report Fruit Fruit crops are showing stress due to lack of moisture. In the southwest, apple growers continued scouting for insect damage. Lack of rain has slowed fruit development. Apples were sizing well in the southeast and west central. Along the Ridge, trees were at bud set. Some isolated storm damage was reported. In the southwest, blueberry harvest slowed as non-irrigated fields were abandoned. Blueberry harvest continued in the southeast. Peaches harvest was in full swing in the southwest. In the southeast, peach harvest continued. In the west central, harvest of early varieties began. Grapes were at verasion in the southwest. In the northwest, grapes were developing well. In the west central, tart cherry harvest was complete. Quality there was excellent. Tart cherry harvest neared completion in the northwest. Quality was holding up well in the region. Vegetables Vegetable crops continued to grow well this week in warm and mostly dry weather. Carrot harvest began in southern regions. There were reports of some fields that were flooded out due to previous rainfall. Onion crops advanced and looked good. Pepper harvest continued in some areas. In the west central, some fields experienced blossom drop. Potato harvest progressed. Pumpkin plants continued to color. Snap bean harvest continued. Plantings looked good after a week of dry down. Sweet corn harvest also continued. Reports of corn borer remained low. Squash, zucchini, and cucumbers showed signs of pest activity and virus symptoms. Harvest continued. Tomatoes for fresh market harvest continued with good size and quality, while growth of processing tomatoes advanced.
