mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released October 31, 2005 Week Ending Date October 30, 2005 Issue MI-CW4505 Agricultural Summary Cool Temperatures Six days were suitable for fieldwork during the week ending October 30, according to the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. Precipitation amounts ranged from 0.01 inches in the southwest Lower Peninsula to 0.54 inches in the east central Lower Peninsula. Average temperatures ranged from 4 degrees below normal in the southwest, south central and southeast Lower Peninsula to 1 degree above normal in the eastern and western Upper Peninsula. Farmers continued to harvest remaining crops. Recent cold temperatures helped corn farmers. A farmer in the southeast said, "Weather was cold with several hard freezes. This helped corn to dry down with harvest finishing up in many places." A reporter from the northwest echoed, "All crops have stopped growth due to a couple of nights of low 20 degree temperatures. This has helped to dry down the corn." Field Crops Report Field Crops Corn harvest continued ahead of schedule. Soybean harvest slowed this past week. The fourth cutting of alfalfa was slowed due to unfavorable drying conditions. For sugarbeets, harvest progressed as beets continued to be stockpiled. Winter wheat planting was mostly completed. Wheat condition varied depending on the amount of rain received in the area. Fruit, Vegetable, and Specialty Crops Report Fruit Apple harvest was essentially complete throughout the state. Orchard activities included picking up juice apples, hauling empty bins back from processors, and some fall weed spraying. Vegetables Harvest of most vegetables concluded across the State. Carrot and onion harvest was wrapping up. Potato harvest neared completion in most areas. Squash harvest for processing was well underway.
