mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released May 8, 2006 Week Ending Date May 7, 2006 Issue MI-CW1806 Agricultural Summary Rapid Planting Progress Six days were suitable for fieldwork during the week ending May 7, according to the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. Precipitation amounts ranged from 0.03 inches in the northeast Lower Peninsula to 0.61 inches in the southeastern Lower Peninsula. Average temperatures ranged from normal in the southwest Lower Peninsula to 5 degrees above normal in the northeast Lower Peninsula. Planting progressed at a rapid pace. Dry weather and cool nights, however, have slowed emergence. A farmer in the northeast mentioned that, "A lot of corn was planted this past week, but we need rain." A farmer in the south central mentioned that, "We had 0.70 inches of rain earlier in the week. Some of the early planted corn was just emerging in the last two days." Field Crops Dry conditions persisted in the northern and Thumb areas of the State while the southern and central areas received some rain. Corn planting proceeded at a fast pace. Many farmers concentrated on corn before planting other crops. Soybean planting started in most areas. Planting progress was faster in the southern districts than in the central districts of the State. Most sugarbeets emergence has been generally good except for the dry areas. Weed control has been good from timely herbicide application. Hay wintered well and was growing. There were reports of alfalfa weevil being over the threshold in a few fields in the southwest. Most oats have emerged and were in good condition. Wheat was reported in good condition with growth in many fields ahead of normal. Fruit Temperatures continued to be warm and mild last week. Light showers in some areas caused concern for disease development. Reports regarding the previous week's frost damage were variable across the state. Apples were blooming in the southwest and southeast. Green fruitworm larvae were found, and oriental fruit moth was a concern in the central area. Blueberries progressed to early pink bud. Peaches were at petal fall in the southwest, where frost damage was extensive in some sites. In the southeast, peaches were at full bloom to early petal fall for most varieties. Peaches in central areas were blooming. Pears were at petal fall in the southwest and full bloom in the southeast. Tart Cherries were in petal fall and full bloom in the southern areas. Sweet Cherries were in the shuck in the southwest and were in bloom to early petal fall in the southeast. Southwestern oriental plums were in the shuck and European plums were at full bloom. Grape growing shoots were severely damaged in the southwest; moderate damage was reported in the southeast. Strawberries were blooming in the southwest. Moderate frost damage was reported by growers in the southwest and southeast. Vegetables Vegetable growers continued to plant various crops throughout the State. Asparagus harvest advanced rapidly throughout the week. A frost on Saturday caused some asparagus to be diverted from fresh market to processing. Transplanting was progressing for tomatoes, summer squash, zucchini and cucumbers. Direct seeding was also active. Carrot planting and emergence was on schedule. Some irrigation was required to get carrots to germinate in some areas. Onion planting neared completion. Cabbage and onions were in good shape. Planting of sweet corn continued. Some planting of frost susceptible vegetable crops was delayed.
