mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released July 10, 2006 Week Ending Date July 9, 2006 Issue MI-CW2706 Agricultural Summary Varied Rains Six days were suitable for fieldwork during the week ending July 9, according to the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. Precipitation amounts ranged from 0.15 inches in the southwest Lower Peninsula to 0.84 inches in the east central Lower Peninsula. Average temperatures ranged from 1 degree below normal in the west central, southwest, south central, and southeast Lower Peninsula to 3 degrees above normal in the eastern Upper Peninsula. Crop progress and condition depended on rainfall, which varied across the State. A farmer in the west central mentioned that, "It was a very dry week and some crops on lighter soils are showing moisture stress." A farmer in the southeast said that, "Corn is making excellent progress with the mild weather. Soybeans and dry beans were doing well also, except where they received too much rain." Field Crops Report Field Crops Rainfall was greatest in southeast and decreased going northwest across the State. Corn continued to grow and was slightly above average for height. Soybean fields were in good condition. There were reports of problems with nematodes in the Thumb region. First cuttings of hay were nearly complete. Regrowth depended on availability of rains. Wheat harvest began in the southeast. Most oats were headed and in good condition. Dry beans continued to progress. There were reports of herbicide injury in the Thumb. Sugarbeet growth continued. Spraying will start soon due to reports of cercospora leaf spot. Fruit, Vegetable, and Specialty Crops Report Fruit Apples across the southeast and southwest grew to 2 inches in diameter. Red Delicious apples in the northwest were 1.75 inches. Peaches sized to 2 inches in diameter in the southeast. Tart cherry harvest activities were coming to an end in the southern regions. West central producers were in the midst of harvest activities. Northwest tart cherry harvest is expected to begin this week. Sweet cherry harvest was underway across the State. Cracking in northwestern sweet cherries was not as severe as previously expected. Grape bloom ended in the northwest. Blueberry harvest was underway, and the crop looked good. Reporters across the State indicated that strawberry harvest was 70 percent complete. Vegetables Vegetable crops continued to progress well across the State. Summer squash and zucchini harvest continued. Cucumbers continued to be harvested with an increase in volume. Carrots and celery continued to develop. Cabbage harvest continued at a rapid pace. Onion bulbs continued to develop. Early seeded pumpkin plants were beginning to bloom. Potatoes continued to look good and were beginning to size. In early planted sweet corn fields, harvest started in some areas on a limited basis. Tomatoes and peppers continued to grow well.
