mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released October 2, 2006 Week Ending Date October 1, 2006 Issue MI-CW3906 Agricultural Summary Rain and Frost Four days were suitable for fieldwork during the week ending October 1, according to the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. Precipitation amounts ranged from 0.23 inches in the south central Lower Peninsula to 1.06 inches in the west central Lower Peninsula. Average temperatures ranged from 5 degrees below normal in the northeast, west central, southwest, and south central Lower Peninsula to 2 degree below normal in the eastern Upper Peninsula. The first light frost hit many areas of the State. A farmer in the east central region mentioned that, "We received frost, but it was not very hard " A farmer in the southeast said that, "A light frost hit on the morning of the 29th of September, but did no real damage." Field Crops Report Field Crops Cool, wet weather continues to limit harvest for most crops. Corn continued to dry down. Silage harvest neared the end for many parts of the State. Soybean continued to turned yellow and drop leaves. Third and fourth cuttings of hay was limited due to the rains. Potato harvest continued. Dry bean harvest continued. Sugarbeet harvest continued on a limited basis. Winter wheat planting continued on dryer soils. Fruit, Vegetable, and Specialty Crops Report Fruit Apple harvest continued to move along quickly last week. Growers in the southwest harvested Red and Golden Delicious apples. In the southeast, growers were picking Jonagold and Golden Delicious, and spot picking Empire and Red Delicious. Grape harvest progressed across the State. Growers in the southwest were careful to wait for sugar levels to rise before harvesting fruit. Vegetables The cooler temperatures and rainfall continued as vegetable growers across the State continued to gather a variety of vegetables. Celery harvest continued on schedule, while onion harvest neared completion. Carrot harvest continued. Pumpkin and winter squash harvest progressed. Snap bean harvest neared completion. Potato harvest continued in some areas. Tomato harvest for processing neared completion in the southeast.
