mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released October 10, 2006 Week Ending Date October 8, 2006 Issue MI-CW4006 Agricultural Summary Continued Rain Four days were suitable for fieldwork during the week ending October 8, according to the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. Precipitation amounts ranged from 0.18 inches in the eastern Upper Peninsula to 1.95 inches in the west central Lower Peninsula. Average temperatures ranged from normal in the east central and southeast Lower Peninsula to 5 degrees above normal in the eastern Upper Peninsula. Continued rains slowed or halted crop harvest. A farmer in the central region mentioned that, "Rains in late September and early October have prevented harvest." A farmer in the south central said that, "Rains this past week brought most operations to a standstill." Field Crops Report Field Crops Cool, wet weather continues to limit harvest for most crops. Corn continued to mature. Harvest was slowed due to slow dry down. Silage harvest was nearly complete. Soybean harvest continued. Fourth cuttings of hay continued. Potato harvest continued. Dry bean harvest continued at a normal pace. Sugarbeet harvest continued. Winter wheat planting continued, but it is still behind the normal pace. Fruit, Vegetable, and Specialty Crops Report Fruit Harvest of late season apple varieties, such as Red and Golden Delicious, continued. Concord grape harvest progress has been slow. The weather has not been conducive to ripening and development of adequate sugar levels. Vegetables Heavy precipitation and cooler temperatures posed a challenge for harvest activities in some areas of the State, as vegetable growers continued to gather late season crops. Some farmers reported scattered frost. Celery harvest neared completion. Carrot harvest continued slowly in the west central area. Pumpkin harvest progressed in the southeast. Winter squash harvest continued at a slow pace in the west central area. Harvest of tomatoes for processing was over 90 percent complete in the southeast.
