mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released October 16, 2006 Week Ending Date October 15, 2006 Issue MI-CW4106 Agricultural Summary Cold and Snow Three days were suitable for fieldwork during the week ending October 15, according to the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. Precipitation amounts ranged from 0.43 inches in the south central Lower Peninsula to 1.39 inches in the northwest Lower Peninsula. Average temperatures ranged from 11 degrees below normal in the western Upper Peninsula to 7 degrees below normal in the east central and southeast Lower Peninsula. Snow, rain, and cold temperatures limited fieldwork across the State. A farmer in the east central region mentioned that, "Persistent rains kept field activities at a minimum during the first part of the week. Producers returned to the fields on Friday to harvest corn, soybeans, and sugarbeets." A farmer in the south central said that, "Producers harvested soybeans and planted wheat early in the week to beat the cold, wet weather pattern that moved through the State on Wednesday. Snow, rain and cold weather stopped all fieldwork." Field Crops Report Field Crops Snow and cold temperatures slowed harvest. Corn was mostly mature. Harvest was slightly behind normal. Soybean harvest continued. One reporter observed a field where soybeans were beginning to fall. Potato harvest continued. Dry bean harvest continued. Sugarbeet harvest continued on a limited basis. Winter wheat planting continued where soils were dry enough. Fruit, Vegetable, and Specialty Crops Report Fruit Apple growers continued to harvest varieties such as Red and Golden Delicious, Idared, Rome, and Fuji apples. The winter-like weather did not do major damage to apples remaining on trees. In the southern and central counties, growers expect to wrap up harvest in ten days to two weeks. Cooler weather is expected to improve color and firmness. Vegetables An unexpected prelude to winter during the week hindered fieldwork across the State, as vegetable growers continued to gather late season crops. Wet conditions continued to slow carrot harvest. Harvest of celery for processing continued for some, as fresh market harvest neared completion in the southwest. Pumpkin picking continued with the low temperatures having little to no affect on quality. Winter squash harvest continued.
