mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released October 23, 2006 Week Ending Date October 22, 2006 Issue MI-CW4206 Agricultural Summary Rains Continue Three days were suitable for fieldwork during the week ending October 22, according to the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. Precipitation amounts ranged from 0.66 inches in the western Upper Peninsula to 1.81 inches in the northeast Lower Peninsula. Average temperatures ranged from 7 degrees below normal in the western Upper Peninsula to 2 degrees below normal in the central, south central, and southeast Lower Peninsula. Continued rains limited harvest. A farmer in the Thumb area mentioned that, "It is very wet in this area and growers are struggling to do any kind of harvesting and fieldwork." A farmer in the southwest said that, "Everything is at a standstill until we get a freeze that allows producers to get into the fields to complete harvest, or we get a week without rain or snow." Field Crops Report Field Crops Continued rains slowed harvest. Corn continued to dry down, but harvest was limited due to the rains. Soybean harvest slowed as farmers switched to corn harvest. Potato harvest continued on pace with last year. Dry bean harvest was mostly complete. Sugarbeet harvest continued on a pace for factory needs. Winter wheat planting was limited due to continued rains. Fruit, Vegetable, and Specialty Crops Report Fruit Apple harvest continued across the State last week. Growers picked the latest maturing varieties of Red Delicious, Idared, Law Rome, and Fuji. Granny Smith, Winesap, and Braeburn apples are almost ready for harvest. Grape growers continued to struggle through harvest. Wet weather conditions made it difficult to move pickers through muddy vineyards. Growers who had completed their harvests helped others by supplying trucks, trailers, and harvesters. Vegetables Precipitation and cooler temperatures created challenges for fieldwork, as harvest of late season vegetable crops was nearly wrapped up. Carrot harvest continued slowly. Pumpkin picking was completed in some areas. Winter squash harvest continued.
