mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released October 30, 2006 Week Ending Date October 29, 2006 Issue MI-CW4306 Agricultural Summary Cool and Wet Three days were suitable for fieldwork during the week ending October 29, according to the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. Precipitation amounts ranged from 0.15 inches in the central Lower Peninsula to 0.89 inches in the southeast Lower Peninsula. Average temperatures ranged from 9 degrees below normal in the southwest and south central Lower Peninsula to 6 degrees below normal in the eastern Upper Peninsula and northwest and central Lower Peninsula. Cool temperatures slowed drying of crops and wet fields. A farmer in the northwest mentioned that, "It looks as if there will be some unharvested crops this year. Early wet weather has hampered harvest." A farmer in the southwest said that, "Corn and soybeans are still standing relatively well. Harvest operations have been significantly delayed due to frequent rains." Field Crops Report Field Crops Farmers continued to be hampered by the above normal rainfall in October. Corn harvest continued but was well behind normal. Soybean harvest continued. There were reports that some soybeans were too wet to harvest. Potato harvest continued. Dry bean harvest was nearing completion. There were reports that some beans may be abandoned due to the heavy rains in October. Sugarbeet harvest continued but was still behind normal. Winter wheat planting continued on a limited basis due to wet fields and the slower than normal soybean harvest. Fruit, Vegetable, and Specialty Crops Report Fruit Apple harvest was nearly finished last week. Growers began fall clean-up activities in orchards and vineyards across the State. Vegetables Cool temperatures and wet soil conditions continued to create challenges in the field for growers as harvest of late season vegetable crops concluded in many areas across the State. Carrot harvest continued in the west central area. Pumpkin picking wrapped up over the weekend, and winter squash harvest neared completion in some areas.
