mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released November 6, 2006 Week Ending Date November 5, 2006 Issue MI-CW4406 Agricultural Summary Cool but Dry Five days were suitable for fieldwork during the week ending November 5, according to the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. Precipitation amounts ranged from none in the west central, central, and east central Lower Peninsula to 0.26 inches in the eastern Upper Peninsula. Average temperatures ranged from 7 degrees below normal in the east central Lower Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula to 4 degrees below normal in the central Lower Peninsula. Dry conditions helped farmers return to the fields. A farmer in the east central mentioned that, "Corn, soybean, and sugarbeet harvest is going at a fast pace where soils are dry enough." A farmer in the southeast said that, "Generally dry conditions this week allowed harvest and wheat planting to resume. Some fields are still too wet to get on, but dry, windy conditions helped corn and soybeans to dry down." Field Crops Report Field Crops Farmers were able to return to the field with the drier weather. Corn harvest continued at a faster pace than in previous weeks. Soybean harvest continued. Some farmers finished soybean harvest and began concentrating on corn harvest. Potato harvest continued. Sugarbeet harvest slowed due to the cool temperatures. Winter wheat planting continued at a slow pace. For some farmers, the soybeans have not been harvested on ground originally selected for winter wheat planting. Fruit, Vegetable, and Specialty Crops Report Fruit Most fruit harvest was complete. Fall clean-up activities continued in orchards and vineyards across the State. Vegetables Favorable weather conditions increased harvest activities during the week as harvest of most late season vegetable crops was completed. Carrot harvest moved into high gear while harvest of squash for processing fell behind schedule in the west central area. In the southeast, some growers continued to harvest cabbage and cauliflower as all other vegetables were finished for the season.
