mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released November 13, 2006 Week Ending Date November 12, 2006 Issue MI-CW4506 Agricultural Summary Harvest Progressing Five days were suitable for fieldwork during the week ending November 12, according to the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. Precipitation amounts ranged from 0.55 inches in the western Upper Peninsula to 0.92 inches in the eastern Upper Peninsula. Average temperatures ranged from 3 degrees above normal in the northeast, west central, and east central Lower Peninsula to 5 degrees above normal in the western Upper Peninsula. Harvest was in full swing for most of the State until Friday, November 10, when heavy rains turned fields muddy. A farmer in the west central mentioned that, "With the exception of some snow and rain, we had a good harvesting week. Things are moving at a good pace, but some really wet soils are still causing problems." A farmer in the southwest said that, "Harvest was going full speed until the inch and a half of rain on Friday night." Field Crops Report Field Crops Farmers were able to harvest between rains. Corn harvest continued. There were reports that moisture has been running higher than previous years. Soybean harvest continued, but the pace was still behind normal. Potato harvest neared completion. Sugarbeet harvest continued. Winter wheat planting neared completion. Vegetables Harvest activities continued at a steady pace during the week, as producers worked to wrap up harvest of late season vegetable crops for the year. In the west central area, some growers caught up to their normal harvest schedule as they continued to harvest carrots.
