mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released June 11, 2007 Week Ending Date June 10, 2007 Issue MI-CW2307 Agricultural Summary Cooler Temperatures Five days were suitable for fieldwork during the week ending June 10, according to the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. Precipitation amounts ranged from 0.12 inches in the central Lower Peninsula to 1.03 inches in the northeast Lower Peninsula. Average temperatures ranged from 4 degrees below normal in the west central Lower Peninsula to normal in the western Upper Peninsula. The week was cooler than normal but the temperatures did not hinder crop progress. There was little rainfall seen across most of the State. A farmer in the northwest mentioned that, "Some rain over the last weekend but we are still very short of moisture for crops. Some very hot, muggy days have dried out the ground." Another farmer in the west central said that, "A lot of progress was made this week with first cutting hay but it was not a good week for spraying with three days of high winds." Field Crops Report Field Crops Variable weather conditions continued across the State. Most areas received rainfall, although precipitation amounts varied. Corn growth advanced in humid weather. Corn condition varied but remained generally good. Nitrogen and herbicides were applied. Soybean growth was slow. Nearly all soybeans were planted with a few fields remaining to be planted. There were reports of bean leaf beetles and aphids in some areas. Oats continued to progress well. Dry bean planting continued. Alfalfa harvest was slowed in some areas by persistent rains. Alfalfa weevil feeding continued. Growers are advised to be watchful of potato leafhoppers in re-growth. Sugarbeets continued to progress well with good stands. Winter wheat continued to look good. Fruit, Vegetable, and Specialty Crops Report Fruit Apples ranged from 15 mm in the northwest to .75 to 1.25 inches in the southwest, where fire blight symptoms were observed. Apple scab infection occurred in most regions. Blueberries had 10 to 12 mm green fruit. Peaches were about 1 inch in diameter; hand thinning continued. The west central area reported a full crop. Pears were 15 to 25 mm in diameter across the State. Plums ranged from 13 mm in the northwest to 22 mm in diameter in the southeast. Tart cherries were 12 to 13 mm in the northwest and were yellowing in the southwest. Cherry leaf spot infections were widespread in the northwest. Sweet cherries ranged from 12 to 13 mm in the northwest to 21 mm in diameter in the southeast. Concord grape blooming ended in the southwest, and vinifera blooming began. Phomopsis lesions were found on leaves and shoots. Strawberry harvest began in parts of the southeast region. Vegetables The vegetable crops were in good condition. There were reports of sand damage due to high winds late last week. Carrot planting was winding down and should be finished this week or next week. Asparagus harvest continued, except in the southwest where harvest was completed. In west central Michigan, common asparagus beetles continued to affect some fields. Celery planting and growth continued on schedule. The cabbage crop was excellent. Harvest of early planted cabbage was expected to start next week. Potato development in the southeast varied from just emerged to developing tubers. Most reports on sweet corn height were over 12 inches. There were reports of Stewart's bacterial wilt and European corn borers in some fields. Watermelon and cantaloup transplanting continued. Pumpkin planting continued. In the southeast, yellow squash and zucchini were beginning to flower. The earliest tunnel planted crop was at first harvest. Cucumbers planted in tunnels continued to flower. Tomato, pepper and eggplant transplanting continued. Early planted tomatoes were beginning to bloom. Growth of onions slowed this past week. Early planted snap beans were budding. Growers were monitoring for pests.
