mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released September 17, 2007 Week Ending Date September 16, 2007 Issue MI-CW3707 Agricultural Summary Cooler Than Normal Five days were suitable for fieldwork during the week ending September 16, according to the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. Precipitation varied from 0.32 inches in the southwest Lower Peninsula to 1.32 inches in the east central Lower Peninsula. Average temperatures ranged from 8 degrees below normal in the south central Lower Peninsula to 6 degrees below normal in the eastern Upper Peninsula, northwest, northeast, west central, central, east central, and southeast Lower Peninsula. A farmer in the northwest mentioned that, "Recent rains have stimulated growth in pastures, corn, and hay. Fall pastures will be better than expected earlier." Another respondent in the south central said that, "In visiting with producers, vegetable crop quality was not as good as in past years. Speculation is due to the extremely dry weather experienced in the summer months." Field Crops Report Field Crops Cooler temperatures returned during the week as crops continued to advance across the State. Corn was reported in the mature stage of development in many areas. Silage harvest continued, as harvest of high moisture corn began in some areas. Soybeans continued to turn and drop leaves. Alfalfa harvest was slowed due to the cooler temperatures, as the third cutting neared completion and a fourth cutting continued in some areas. Harvest of sugarbeets began on a limited basis in a few fields. Harvest of early planted dry beans continued; later planted beans continued to drop leaves. Winter wheat field preparations continued and planting got underway. Fruit, Vegetable, and Specialty Crops Report Fruit Gala and Honeycrisp apple harvests were wrapped up, and picking of Jonathans began. Niagara grape harvesting was finished and Concord harvesting was about to begin. Vegetables Vegetable harvest continued with cooler temperatures and precipitation across the State. Disease problems increased due to rains over the previous month. Carrot and celery harvest continued. Potato harvest for fresh market and processing continued. Sweet corn harvesting was active. Early pumpkin and winter squash harvest continued. Watermelon harvest was underway in the southeast. Tomato, pepper, and eggplant harvest continued. Onion, leek, and beet harvest continued. Cabbage and other cole crop harvest continued. Snap bean harvest was in full swing.
