mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released September 24, 2007 Week Ending Date September 23, 2007 Issue MI-CW3807 Agricultural Summary Warm Weather Returns Seven days were suitable for fieldwork during the week ending September 23, according to the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. Precipitation varied from 0.01 inches in the southeast Lower Peninsula to 1.89 inches in the western Upper Peninsula. Average temperatures ranged from 3 degrees above normal in the southeast Lower Peninsula to 8 degrees above normal in the northwest Lower Peninsula. The warmer, sunny weather provided ideal conditions for growers to work in the fields. A reporter in the Upper Peninsula mentioned that, "We had two nice rains this week, but it was too late for many crops this year. It will help winter wheat plantings." Another farmer in the south central said that, "A good, dry week for just about anything. We are getting fields ready for wheat. Pastures are still growing well with warmer temperatures and no rain." Field Crops Report Field Crops Dry conditions continued across the State. High moisture corn continued to be harvested. Silage harvest was in full swing and neared completion in some areas. Soybeans continued to turn and drop leaves; harvest began in a few fields. Alfalfa harvest continued. The third cutting neared completion; the fourth cutting progressed nicely. Harvest of sugarbeets began is some areas. Dry bean harvest was active in many areas. Winter wheat planting continued in some areas. Fruit, Vegetable, and Specialty Crops Report Fruit Jonathan and Empire apple harvests were active. The Concord grape harvest began September 23. Fall raspberry picking continued. Vegetables Warm, dry weather conditions persisted across the State as harvest of several vegetable crops neared completion. Carrot, celery, and onion harvest continued. Potato harvest continued. Early pumpkin and winter squash harvest continued. Watermelon harvest continued. Tomato harvest for processing continued. Snap bean harvest began in the southeast and continued for the rest of the State.
