mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released October 15, 2007 Week Ending Date October 14, 2007 Issue MI-CW4107 Agricultural Summary Normal Conditions Five days were suitable for fieldwork during the week ending October 14, according to the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. Precipitation varied from 0.21 inches in the southeast Lower Peninsula to 1.03 inches in the eastern Upper Peninsula. Average temperatures ranged from 2 degrees below normal in the western Upper Peninsula to 2 degrees above normal in the northwest, northeast, and east central Lower Peninsula. The cooler weather was gratefully accepted by farmers because it gave relief from the recent high temperatures experienced across the State. A farmer in the Upper Peninsula mentioned that, "Great conditions for uninterrupted farm work. Manure pits are in process of being emptied as the weather has been good for fall tasks." Another farmer in the south central said that, "The weather switched abruptly from summer heat to fall cold, but not very much rain accompanied the cold front. Cool weather has slowed pasture growth." Field Crops Report Field Crops More seasonal temperatures returned to aid in harvest and tillage activities across the State. Harvest of corn continued with most of the corn fully matured; silage harvest was completed. Soybean harvest continued to progress; green stem re-growth was still a concern in some areas. Winter wheat planting progressed and emergence continued to be good. Fruit, Vegetable, and Specialty Crops Report Fruit Picking of late varieties of apples, such as Fuji, Rome, and Northern Spy neared completion in the Southwest and Southeast.
