mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released October 22, 2007 Week Ending Date October 21, 2007 Issue MI-CW4207 Agricultural Summary Warm Temperatures Return Four days were suitable for fieldwork during the week ending October 21, according to the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. Precipitation varied from 0.38 inches in the southeast Lower Peninsula to 1.96 inches in the eastern Upper Peninsula. Average temperatures ranged from 7 degrees above normal in the western Upper Peninsula to 11 degrees above normal in the southeast Lower Peninsula. Rains returned across the State limiting corn and soybean harvest and winter wheat planting. A farmer in the northeast mentioned that, "Severe storms Thursday stopped harvest and fieldwork." A farmer in the Thumb said that, "Even with light showers, farmers were still able to get back into the fields and continue harvesting." Field Crops Report Field Crops Variable weather conditions created some fieldwork delays across the State. The above normal temperatures during the week assisted with the drying down process in many areas. Scattered precipitation slowed harvest of corn and soybeans in many areas. Harvest of sugarbeets faced some delays due primarily to the warm temperatures. Alfalfa harvest of fourth cuttings continued in some areas. Dry bean harvest was completed. Winter wheat planting continued ahead of normal. The continued rainfall was advantageous to emergence. Fruit, Vegetable, and Specialty Crops Report Fruit Fruit harvest was completed. Fall clean-up activities continued in orchards and vineyards across the State. Vegetables Warm temperatures returned with most areas receiving significant rainfall. Carrot harvest continued slowly. Celery harvest neared completion. Pumpkin picking was completed in some areas. Winter squash harvest continued.
