mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released November 9, 2009 Week Ending Date November 8, 2009 Issue MI-CW4509 Agricultural Summary Warmer Temperatures Five days were suitable for fieldwork during the week ending November 8, according to the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. Precipitation varied from 0.02 inch in the southeastern Lower Peninsula to 0.24 inch in the northwest Lower Peninsula. Average temperatures ranged from 1 degree below normal in the east central Lower Peninsula to 3 degrees above normal in the western and eastern Upper Peninsula. The week began with much of the same wet weather experienced over the past couple of weeks. However, drier conditions and warmer temperatures arrived at week end, allowing harvest and winter preparation to progress. Some growers were forced to harvest under less than ideal conditions due to the emergence of mold. Harvest of corn for grain continued in earnest, as many growers continued to wait for additional warm, dry days to reduce the moisture in the crop to a more acceptable level before harvesting. Field Crops Report Field Crops Wet fields, early in the week, made harvest difficult in many areas. Warmer temperatures minimal precipitation, going into the weekend, aided in the dry down and harvest of crops. Corn harvest was underway as conditions permitted. However, moisture levels were higher than ideal for harvest of corn for grain. As a result, growers experienced high drying costs and lengthy lines at elevators. Soybean harvest continued. As conditions permitted, and soybean fields were harvested, wheat planting continued. In the southeast, planting is expected to wrap up by the weekend. The warmer weather should aid farmers in planting and emergence of the crop. Sugarbeet harvest was complete in some counties and nearing completion in others. Dry bean harvest was complete.
