mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released November 16, 2009 Week Ending Date November 15, 2009 Issue MI-CW4609 Agricultural Summary Harvest Progressing Six days were suitable for fieldwork during the week ending November 15, according to the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. Precipitation varied from zero to .08 inch. Average temperatures ranged from 5 degrees above normal in the west central, southwest, and central Lower Peninsula to 7 degrees above normal in the Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Peninsula. Field activities progressed at a faster pace due to warmer than normal temperatures. Some growers continued to experience harvest delays due to high moisture content in corn grain. Fall activities included planting winter wheat, harvesting soybeans, corn, and sugarbeets, and preparing fields and equipment for the winter season. Field Crops Report Field Crops Warmer temperatures aided in the dry down and harvest of crops. Corn harvest was continued as conditions permitted. In the northeast, some corn was taken off as high moisture and used as dairy feed. In the west central, some corn harvested as high moisture was stored in silos. Moisture levels remained high in the corn crop. Therefore, growers experienced high drying costs and lengthy lines at elevators. Sugarbeet and soybean harvest was all but complete. The last of the 2010 wheat crop was planted. However, in the Southeast, there was concern whether the crop would germinate before the snow starts.
