mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released April 25, 2011 Week Ending Date April 24, 2011 Issue MI-CW1711 Agricultural Summary Cold, Wet Week One day was suitable for fieldwork during the week ending April 24, according to the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. Precipitation ranged from 0.42 inches to 0.53 inches in the Upper Peninsula and 0.86 to 2.01 inches in the Lower Peninsula. Temperatures ranged from 6 to 8 degrees below normal in the Upper Peninsula and 7 to 9 degrees below normal in the Lower Peninsula. Cooler temperatures and precipitation dominated weather conditions. Measureable snow amounts hindered progress in northern counties. "It was too cold, wet, or windy to get much done," said a reporter from Oceana County. Any progress came early in the week. Field Crops Report Field Crops Little to no progress was made for field crops. Cold temperatures linked with heavy snow in northern counties and rain throughout the state kept all field activities to a minimum. Ponds formed on heavy soils. Alfalfa fields greened after some areas broke dormancy. A few acres of sugarbeets and oats were planted early in the week. Fruit, Vegetable, and Specialty Crops Report Fruit There was no substantial tree, vine, or bush damage from the snow last Monday. With the rains last weekend, the first apple scab wetting event was reported for the season. Bud development has been slowed due to the cool weather. Vegetables Continued cool, wet, and even snowy weather hampered vegetable fieldwork this past week, although there was some field activity, particularly on lighter soils. Asparagus planting and harvest has been delayed by field conditions. Some carrots for processing were planted. Planting is well behind normal for this point in the season for all vegetable crops.
