mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released July 11, 2011 Week Ending Date July 10, 2011 Issue MI-CW2811 Agricultural Summary Another Warm Dry Week Six days were suitable for fieldwork during the week ended July 10, according to the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. Precipitation ranged from 0.39 inches to 0.46 inches in the Upper Peninsula and no rain to 0.62 inches in the Lower Peninsula. Temperatures were 4 degrees above normal in the Upper Peninsula and ranged from 2 to 4 degrees above normal in the Lower Peninsula. It was another good week for field activity; however, farmers in the Lower Peninsula said crops could use moisture. In some areas, crops benefitted from the heat and showed rapid growth, while other areas showed signs of stress due to lack of moisture. Activities included wrapping up nitrogen applications on corn, weed control, spraying for insects, cutting of hay, and harvesting of wheat, cherries, strawberries, and blueberries. Field Crops Report Field Crops Warm temperatures gave field crops a boost that was much needed. Very little rain fell last week in southern Michigan causing some fields to show moisture stress. It was a good week for alfalfa harvest. Fields needed another good soaking to insure a good next cutting. Corn leaves began to curl as farmers wrapped up nitrogen application on fields. Other crops were starting to show signs of moisture stress. Soybeans remain short. Farmers were gearing up for wheat harvest if they had not started already. Sugarbeet plants started filling in rows. Fruit, Vegetable, and Specialty Crops Report Fruit The tart cherry harvest was underway in the southwest. Sweet cherry harvesting was also in the early stages. Cherry fruit fly catches increased. Blueberry harvesting continued. Strawberry harvest neared completion in the northwest. San Jose scale crawlers were detected in apples in the south. Vegetables Vegetable crops progressed in the above average temperatures this past week, but were in need of moisture. Irrigation was being used where needed. Tomatoes and peppers continued to flower and fruit. Celery looked good overall, but growth was still behind normal. Carrot stands were adequate. Growers monitored for aster leafhoppers. The onion crop had stands of varying densities. Sweet corn was growing well. Growers continued to monitor for European corn borer. Cabbage harvest was progressing, while some transplanting continued. Cucumber, zucchini, and summer squash harvest was underway. Downy mildew on cucumbers was reported in southeast Michigan. Cantaloupe and watermelon were setting fruit. Pumpkins and fall squash were close to bloom in the southwest. Harvest of the pea crop has been completed in the southwest.
