mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released August 22, 2011 Week Ending Date August 21, 2011 Issue MI-CW3411 Agricultural Summary Slow and Steady Six days were suitable for fieldwork during the week ended August 21, according to the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. Precipitation ranged from 0.47 inches to 0.51 inches in the Upper Peninsula and 0.06 to 0.70 inches in the Lower Peninsula. Temperatures were 3 degrees above normal in the Upper Peninsula and ranged from normal to 2 degrees above normal in the Lower Peninsula. A quiet week with a few scattered showers improved crop quality. "All crops look good right now," said a reporter in Bay County. Field Crops Report Field Crops Crops had some nice growing weather this week with moderate temperatures and adequate precipitation. Corn was looking good. The latest planted corn was past R1. Western bean cut worm populations were on the decline. Soybean aphid numbers in southwest Michigan fell dramatically. Natural enemies and disease were the likely cause. Soybean sudden death syndrome symptoms were beginning to develop in Ingham County. Third cutting of alfalfa was underway. Dry beans were at variable stages. Fruit, Vegetable, and Specialty Crops Report Fruit Jersey and Rubel blueberry varieties were machine harvested. Early season apple varieties were picked. The harvest dates for major varieties will likely be about seven to ten days behind normal. European plums were coloring. Harvest of other varieties continued. Redhaven peach harvest continued in the southwest. Pears were 2.5 inches in the south. The Niagara grape harvest was predicted to start September 16; the Concord harvest was forecast to begin about 16 days later. Fall raspberry harvest continued. Vegetables Moderate temperatures and some light rain were appreciated by a variety of vegetable growers this past week. Carrot harvest continued in eastern counties. Disease pressure has abated somewhat due to cooler nights. Pepper and tomato harvest was well underway. Bacterial spot continued to be a concern. Reports from tomato growers vary from fair to good. A small amount of the onion crop has been harvested. Purple blotch, stemphyllium leaf blight, and bacterial soft rot were the most frequently mentioned disease struggles. In West Central Michigan, celery harvest was around fifty percent complete. Early blight has been the major foliar disease issue. Disease pressure remained high in vine crops. Powdery mildew was a concern and was present in particular fields. In the Grand Rapids area, growers reported a favorable melon crop. Sweet corn harvest continued at a vigorous pace. Cabbage harvest was approximately half complete.
