mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released May 14, 2012 Week Ending Date May 13, 2012 Issue MI-CW2012 Agricultural Summary Field Crops Four days were suitable for field work last week. Wet weather kept farmers out of fields at least part of the week. Corn planting continued. Warmer weather and rains helped emergence rates. Soybean planting continued. Wheat condition continued to be very good. Wheat was beginning to head in southern Michigan. Army worm moths were observed. Sugarbeet stands were in good shape. Fruit Apples ranged from full bloom in the north to 10 to 12 mm in the south. Many orchards have little or no fruit. Viable tart cherries are also rare. They were in late petal fall in the northwest. Balatons fared better than Montmorency cherries. Sweet cherries were 4.5 to 7.5 mm in the northwest and 15 mm in the southwest. While the percentage of full crop will be better than for tarts, it will still be small. New shoots in Concord and Niagara juice grapes were 3 to 4 inches long. Wine grapes in the northwest were in late bud swell. Peaches were 12 to 15 mm in the southwest. The crop will be very small. Strawberries were in full bloom in the south; fields were very wet from frost protection. Blueberries were in full bloom to early petal fall. Frost protected blocks were especially susceptible to mummy berry and Phomopsis canker diseases. Bloom began in early bramble varieties. Vegetables Vegetable development was hastened by recent rains and warm weather. Asparagus was growing nicely with the warmer temperatures. Harvest was in full swing. Onions continued to emerge. Celery planting continued, some in the open field. Wet soils have held up progress. Sweet corn was emerging and looked good. Open field processing tomato planting was in full swing. Tomatoes under protection were at pruning stage. Squash and zucchini transplants in tunnels were putting out flowers. Carrot planting neared completion. Stands looked good. The cabbage crop in the southeast looked great. Peas were in early bloom.
