mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released May 21, 2012 Week Ending Date May 20, 2012 Issue MI-CW2112 Agricultural Summary Field Crops Six days were suitable for field work last week. Warm weather with no rain allowed corn and soybean planting to progress at a rapid rate. Most growers in southern Michigan completed corn planting. Some rain is now needed to aid emergence. Hay and haylage were harvested last week. Growers reported that the crop was shorter than normal. Sugarbeet growers applied herbicides and fungicides. Stands are looking very good. Wheat in southern Michigan was heading out. Growers applied fungicides. Fruit Tree fruit are scarce in many areas, and some growers have decided on minimal pest control programs to maintain tree health. Apples ranged from 6 mm in the northwest to 12 to 22 mm in the south. Tart cherries were 8 mm in the northwest and 12 mm in the southwest. Sweet cherries were 9.5 to 11 mm in the northwest and 14 to 16 mm in the southwest. Bacterial canker is widespread in the northwest; many trees may be lost because of this disease. Wine grapes in the northwest were in bud burst. Peaches were 16 to 22 mm in the southwest. Strawberries were at petal fall to thimble-sized fruit in the south. Harvest in the southeast will start around May 25-28, well ahead of normal. Blueberries were in full bloom to late petal fall. Fruit set is variable; early varieties like Bluecrop generally had the most loss from frosts. Pears were 8 mm in the northwest. The crop in the south will be very light. Vegetables Vegetable planting was in full swing for most crops. Some growers considered using irrigation systems. Carrot planting was completed this past week. Asparagus harvest continued at a rapid pace. Onion progress continued. Some insect troubles were reported. Celery planting continued. In the southwest, summer squash and zucchini were being planted in the open field. In the west central, zucchini and squash planting will begin soon. Growers will soon remove the tunnels from above the tomato plants. Transplanting to unprotected fields began. Sweet corn continued to emerge. Peas were in full bloom.
