mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released June 11, 2012 Week Ending Date June 10, 2012 Issue MI-CW2412 Agricultural Summary Field Crops Six days were suitable for field work last week. Little rain, coupled with above average temperatures late in the week had crops looking for moisture. Crops in southern Michigan were most in need. Scattered showers in the Thumb and northern Michigan late in the week helped to provide some moisture, though more is needed. Corn and soybean emergence was uneven in some fields due to lack of moisture. Growers applied herbicides to both crops and side- dressed corn. Dry bean planting continued. Wheat is progressing toward harvest more quickly than normal. Harvest is expected to begin about 2 weeks earlier than normal. Fruit Apples were 16--20 mm in the northwest and about 25 mm in the Grand Rapids area. Tart cherries were 14 mm in the northwest. Harvest will begin in the southwest next week. Sweet cherries were 14 to 16 mm in the northwest, and harvest began in the south. Juice grape bloom continued. Peaches were about 1.5 inches in diameter in the southwest. Strawberry harvest continued across the state. Slug populations were increasing in the southeast. Raspberries in the southwest were in the green fruit; harvest will begin next week. Blueberries were in the green fruit stage. Some growers reported drop of freeze damage fruit. Cranberry bloom continued. Vegetables Asparagus harvest continued in the west central, but was complete in the southwest. The carrot crop looked average to better than average. Growers continued their pest and weed control applications. In the west central, pumpkin, winter squash, and processing zucchini planting was complete. Harvest of summer squash and zucchini under tunnels has begun. Direct seeding to the open field continued. Pepper and eggplant transplanting continued. Staking of pepper fields began in the southwest. Celery plantings looked about average. Thrips have been found in the onion and cabbage crops in the west central region. Early planted cabbage in the southeast looked good, but downy mildew was observed in young transplants. Tomatoes have 1 to 2 inch fruit. Staking was nearly complete. Early planted sweet corn in the southeast was tasseling. Harvest of early peas began in the southwest but were still blooming in the west central. Irrigation was in full swing where available for most vegetable crops.
