mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released July 2, 2012 Week Ending Date July 1, 2012 Issue MI-CW2712 Agricultural Summary Field Crops Seven days were suitable for field work last week. Lack of rain and hot temperatures stressed crops. All crops need rain. Wheat harvest was in full swing, a full two weeks earlier than normal. Hay harvest was in full swing; lack of rain is affecting regrowth. Fruit Arid conditions prompted many growers to irrigate to prevent tree stress. Some plants shut down to conserve water. Apples ranged from 35 mm in the northwest to 1.75 inches in the southwest. Fireblight strikes were evident in blocks across the northwest region. Tart cherry harvest was completed in the southwest. The crops size was reduced by bird feeding. Harvest continued in the west central region. The sweet cherry harvest began in the northwest. Wine grapes were in late bloom in the northwest. Harvest of very early varieties of peaches began; oriental fruit moth catches increased. Strawberry harvest was finished, and renovation began. Raspberry harvest continued; the yields of summer varieties have been very low due to tip burn or dieback from the April freezes. Early variety blueberries like Duke were hand harvested. Fruit is ripening quickly. Pears ranged from 27 mm in the northwest to 1 inch in diameter in the southwest. Vegetables Harvest of summer squash, cucumbers, and zucchini continued in the southwest region. Pepper transplanting continued, as did staking and tying. Early planted peppers have 2-inch diameter fruit. Tomato staking, pruning and tying continued in the southwest. Bacterial problems have been spotted on tunnel- grown plants, but the dry weather should help minimize the spread of the disease. Sweet corn was responding well to the increased temperatures in the southwest as long as the field was irrigated. Growers using row covers will be harvesting soon. Watermelon and cantaloupe transplants were flowering and setting fruit in the southwest region. In the central region, pea harvest began. All regions have reported zero to minimal rain. For the non-irrigated fields, this has caused the crops to grow slower.
