mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released July 9, 2012 Week Ending Date July 8, 2012 Issue MI-CW2812 Agricultural Summary Field Crops Six days were suitable for field work last week. Scattered showers and thunderstorms brought much-needed moisture to extreme northwestern, central and eastern sections of Michigan, but rainfall totals in other areas were negligible. Storms in mid-Michigan brought hail. Areas affected were isolated and severity of the hail appeared to be intense in some spots, but overall relatively mild. Symptoms of plant water stress were evident in many spots, especially across the southwestern Lower Peninsula. The moisture stress was exacerbated by unusually high temperatures during the past week. Forty-one percent of corn acres were rated poor or very poor. That compares with sixty percent at this time in the drought year of 1988. Corn began to tassel. Soybeans were blooming rapidly. Forty percent of soybean acres were rated poor or very poor, compared with fifty percent in 1988. Sugarbeet crop had good root development and is seeking subsoil moisture. Harvest is scheduled to begin in mid August. Wheat and oat harvest continued. Fruit Non-irrigated crops were drought-stressed. Apples ranged from 42 mm in the northwest to 2.0 inches in the southwest. Tart cherry harvest continued in the west central region. The sweet cherry harvest continued in the northwest. American brown rot in cherries with cracks has been a problem. Wine grapes were in buckshot in the northwest. Fruit on primary shoots of juice grapes in the southwest were at berry touch; fruit on secondary shoots were at buckshot. Harvest of early varieties of peaches continued. Summer raspberry harvest wound down. Blueberry harvest moved rapidly. Spotted wing Drosophilia arrived early due to the intensely hot weather. Japanese plums were over an inch in diameter in the southwest. Vegetables All across the state, the heat and dry weather were beginning to take their toll on vegetables; especially on vegetables in non-irrigated fields. In the southwest region, sweet corn harvest was underway. Squash vine borers were present in the southwest region. An increased number of mites was found in the region as well. In the central region, vine vegetables were suffering due to the heat and dryness. In the southeast region, harvest of market tomatoes began.
