mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released August 13, 2012 Week Ending Date August 12, 2012 Issue MI-CW3312 Agricultural Summary Field Crops Five days were suitable for field work last week. Cooler temperatures and some much needed rain was welcomed mid-week. Central Michigan received substantial rainfall ranging from 4 to 8 inches. In southwest Michigan, early planted corn fields were approaching the dent stage under irrigation. In other areas, growth and development has been slowed again by moderate to severe drought conditions. Soybeans are expected to respond well to recent rains. Dry beans were setting pods. Insecticide applications for potato leafhoppers and western bean cutworms were made. Spider mite continued to be active in many areas in several fields and in various crops. Second cutting of hay in the northwest was slow due to cool nights and light rain during the day, while third cutting has wrapped up in central and west central Michigan. Oat harvest was wrapping up. Potato harvest expected to begin this week in central Michigan. Fruit Concord grapes were at veraison. Wine grapes were at bunch closure in the southwest and at green fruit in the northwest. Disease pressure has been low due to the dry season. Loring, Canadian Harmony, and PF17 peaches were ripening. Pears ranged from 48 mm in the northwest to 2.75 inches in the southwest. Paula Red and Zestar apples were harvested. Codling moth numbers began declining. Blueberry harvest was winding down; Elliotts were machine harvested. Fall raspberry harvest was underway. Vegetables In the southwest region, harvest continued on all crops. Many vine crops, including cantaloupe, watermelon, pumpkin and fall squash, have early set fruit that matured, followed by later set fruit which formed after the hot weather. In squash and pumpkin fields, powdery mildew, squash bugs and viruses were prevalent. Summer squash and zucchini harvest continued with fruit growing rapidly in the central region. Sweet corn, pickle and cucurbit harvest continued throughout the State. In the southeast region, leafhopper populations were declining in carrots, while mites continued to be a problem in eggplant.
