mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released August 20, 2012 Week Ending Date August 19, 2012 Issue MI-CW3412 Agricultural Summary Field Crops Five days were suitable for field work last week. Seasonal temperatures and rain were welcomed this week. Rains helped to improve corn and soybean conditions. Some corn silage harvest began in southeast Michigan. Sugarbeet harvest began on a limited basis. Growers sprayed a third application for control of Cercospora leafspot. Potato harvest began in the Thumb region. Field activities for the week included baling straw, weed spraying, and preparing and repairing equipment for harvest. Fruit Wine grapes in the northwest were at veraison. Late season peaches were harvested. Late summer varieties of apples, such as Zestar and Ginger Gold, were harvested. Blueberry harvest neared completion. Fall raspberry harvest was continued. There is some concern about the effects of the drought on future fruit crops. Vegetables Harvest continued on all vegetable crops in the southwest region. Pumpkin and squash growers observed an increase in powdery mildew and virus symptoms due to recent heavy dews. Tomato growers noted decreased fruit quality and marketable yields due to the recent cloudy, cool, and wet conditions. Pepper growers reported decreased yield and quality because of the hot weather earlier in the season. Pickle harvest continued in the central region. Mites continued to be a problem in tomatoes, muskmelons, and eggplant, and thrips continued to cause problems in cabbage.
