mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released September 4, 2012 Week Ending Date September 2, 2012 Issue MI-CW3612 Agricultural Summary Field Crops Seven days were suitable for field work last week. Hot and dry weather continued. Corn silage harvest continued. Early planted corn for grain was beginning to mature. Soybean leaves were yellowing and beginning to drop in southern Michigan. Sugarbeet harvest continued on an 'as needed' basis. Early yields have been good. Alfalfa harvest continued. Fruit Grape veraison continued. There is a wide variation in sugar content in juice grapes. That variability has been caused by the different crop loads and whether the clusters developed from primary or secondary buds. The peach harvest wound down, as end of season varieties like Autumn Star, Encore, and PF35-007 were picked. The apple harvest is two to three weeks ahead of normal, depending on variety. Galas, McIntosh, Honeycrisp, and Golden Supreme harvests were underway. Maturity variability within variety caused spot picking. Some growers were irrigating to increase fruit size. Damage from spring frosts was evident on some fruit. Blueberry harvesting neared completion. Fall raspberry harvest continued. Vegetables In the southeast region, harvest of early planted sweet corn was completed, while the harvest of later planted sweet corn was winding down. Processing and fresh market tomato harvest continued in the southeast region. In the southwest, the recent rains have contributed to fruit cracking and the spread of bacterial diseases in tomato crops. Cucurbit crop harvest has slowed down, but still continues. Downy mildew remained a moderate risk in the southeast region and continued to be a concern for the southwest region. Powdery mildew was still prevalent in pumpkin and squash crops throughout the State due to heavy dews. Transplant of cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower crops for the fall has started, with some fields having been established for a couple of weeks in the southeast region.
