mi-crop-weather State Michigan Crop Weather Released September 17, 2012 Week Ending Date September 16, 2012 Issue MI-CW3812 Agricultural Summary Field Crops Six days were suitable for field work last week. A trace of rain fell across some areas of the State, with temperatures ranging from normal to 3 degrees above normal in the Lower Peninsula, and 3 to 4 degrees above normal in the Upper Peninsula. Corn harvest began. Silage harvest continued. Harvest of early planted soybeans began. Dry bean harvest continued. Sugarbeet harvest continued on a scheduled delivery basis. Growers continue to spray fungicides to control cercospora. Alfalfa harvest continued. Fruit The harvest of Niagara grape ended, and Concord harvesting began. Sugar levels have been high due to the reduced crop and summer heat. Wine grape harvesting was also underway. The peach harvest was completed in the southwest. Gala, McIntosh, and Honeycrisp apple harvests were finished; Jonathan, Jonagold, Golden Delicious harvests were underway. The drop has been unusually high in several varieties. Pear harvest continued. Vegetables Fall squash harvested continued as direct seed fields matured. Pumpkin fields began to die back, especially those not receiving good control for powdery mildew. Harvest of late planted yellow squash, zucchini, and cucumbers continued in the southwest, while some tomato, pepper, muskmelon and cantaloupe harvest continued in the southeast. Sweet corn harvest was nearing completion. In West Central Michigan, harvest of processing broccoli and carrots continued. As vegetable harvest winds down for the season and fields are removed from production, growers have begun removing plastic mulch and drip tape.
