Johnson, Director Michigan Annual Crop Summary A warmer than normal fall with a later than normal first frost, allowed most Michigan crops to out yield 2010, according to the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. Harvest conditions were less than ideal in some areas of the State due to a wet fall, however most growers were able to wrap up harvest by mid- November. Growers in southeast lower Michigan were the exception; their harvest was delayed further by ample rainfall in the fall. Some highlights of the Crop Production Summary are as follows: The corn for grain yield at 153, was up 3 bushels from last year’s then record high yield of 150 bushels per acre. Grain production was a record 335 million bushels. Both the yield and production exceeded their previous records set in 2010. Silage yield at 18.0 tons per acre was down 0.5 tons per acre from last year. Corn for grain harvest began in early October. Harvest was nearly complete by early December. Harvest was prolonged due to wet weather. Soybean yield, at 44 bushels, was up 0.5 bushels per acre from last year. Soybean harvested acres at 1.94 million acres was down 5 percent from last year. Production, at 85.4 million bushels, was down 4 percent from 2010. Soybean harvest began in early October, slightly behind average. Bean quality was excellent. Sugarbeet yield, at 24 tons per acre, was down 2 tons per acre from 2010. Production at 3.67 million tons was down 4 percent from 2010. Sugarbeet harvest began on a limited basis in mid-September and piling began in late October, later than last year due to the warm fall. Harvest was complete by mid-November. Dry bean production in the State was 3.36 million hundredweight, 20.6 percent less than 2010. Yield per acre was 200 pounds more than 2010, but acreage was down significantly which resulted in lower production. Dry bean growers reported a higher than anticipated yield due to favorable temperatures and rains arriving when needed. Spearmint production in Michigan was 126,000 pounds, up 13 percent from the 2010 crop. Spearmint yields averaged 70 pounds per acre, unchanged from last year. Peppermint production was 46,000 pounds, up 7 percent from 2010. Peppermint yields averaged 58 pounds per acre, down 3 pounds from last year. All hay production was 2.75 million tons, up slightly from last year. Potato production was 15.2 million hundredweight, down 3 percent from last year. The average yield was 345 cwt per acre.
