Johnson, Director February Milk Production Dairy herds in Michigan produced 714 million pounds of milk during February, up 9.5 percent from a year ago, according to the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. The daily rate per cow was 65.9 pounds, up 2.0 pounds from 2011. The dairy herd was estimated at 374,000 head for February, up 10,000 from a year earlier. Milk production in the 23 major States during February totaled 15.2 billion pounds, up 8.3 percent from February 2011. The daily production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 61.4 pounds for February, up 1.9 pounds from February 2011. The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.51 million head, 102,000 head more than February 2011, and up 8,000 head from January 2012.
