Johnson, Director March 1 Grain Stocks "The stocks of major field crops in Michigan were all higher than a year ago", stated Jay Johnson, Director of USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. On March 1, 2012, Michigan corn stocks totaled 152.1 million bushels, 8 percent higher than a year earlier. About 63 percent of the corn was stored on farms. The second quarter disappearance was 118.4 million bushels, compared with 108.0 million bushels a year earlier. Soybean stocks on March 1, 2012, were 41.2 million bushels. That was 22 percent higher than stocks a year earlier. The second quarter indicated disappearance was 24.1 million bushels, compared with 20.4 million bushels during the same period in 2011. Farm stocks of soybeans were 16.5 million bushels. Wheat stocks on March 1, 2012, were 36.6 million bushels, 19 percent above year ago. Approximately 92 percent of wheat stocks were in commercial storage. Third quarter indicated disappearance was 7.8 million bushels, compared with 6.4 million bushels during the same period last year. U.S. corn stocks in all positions on March 1, 2012, totaled 6.01 billion bushels, down 8 percent from March 1, 2011. Of the total stocks, 3.19 billion bushels were stored on farms, down 6 percent from a year earlier. Off-farm stocks, 2.82 billion bushels, were down 10 percent from a year ago. The December 2011 - February 2012 indicated disappearance was 3.64 billion bushels, compared with 3.53 billion bushels during the same period last year. Soybeans stored in all positions on March 1, 2012, totaled 1.37 billion bushels, up 10 percent from March 1, 2011. Soybean stocks stored on farms totaled 555 million bushels, up 10 percent from a year ago. Off-farm stocks, 817 million bushels, were up 10 percent from last March. Indicated disappearance for December 2011 - February 2012 totaled 998 million bushels, down 3 percent from the same period a year earlier. All wheat stored in all positions on March 1, 2012, totaled 1.20 billion bushels, down 16 percent from a year ago. On-farm stocks were estimated at 217 million bushels, down 25 percent from last March. Off-farm stocks, 983 million bushels, were down 14 percent from a year ago. The December 2011- February 2012 indicated disappearance was 462 million bushels, down 9 percent from the same period a year earlier.
