Johnson, Director March Milk Production Dairy herds in Michigan produced 776 million pounds of milk during March, up 7.3 percent from a year ago, according to the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. The daily rate per cow was 66.8 pounds, up 2.8 pounds from 2011. The dairy herd was estimated at 375,000 head for March, up 11,000 from a year earlier. Milk production in the 23 major States during March totaled 16.5 billion pounds, up 4.3 percent from March 2011. The daily production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 62.2 pounds for March, up 1.8 pounds from March 2011. The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.5 million head, 94,000 head more than March 2011, and up 9,000 head from February 2012.
