Johnson, Director April Milk Production Dairy herds in Michigan produced 752 million pounds of milk during April, up 6.2 percent from a year ago, according to the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. The daily rate per cow was 66.7 pounds, up 1.5 pounds from 2011. The dairy herd was estimated at 376,000 head for April, up 14,000 from a year earlier. Milk production in the 23 major States during April totaled 16.0 billion pounds, up 3.3 percent from April 2011. The daily production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 62.5 pounds for April, up 1.3 pounds from April 2011. The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.5 million head, 94,000 head more than April 2011, and up 4,000 head from March 2012.
