mi-press-releases News Release NR-12-39 June 29, 2012 U.S. Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service Michigan Field Office Michigan Department of Agriculture Post Office Box 30239 Lansing, MI 48909-6248 Phone: (517) 324-5300 Facsimile: (517) 324-5299 E-mail: nass-mi@nass.usda.gov Web site: www.nass.usda.gov Jay V. Johnson, Director Michigan Acreage Summary Field crop planting progressed without incident in 2012, largely helped by an earlier than normal spring. Corn planting was completed by the end of May and soybean planting was completed by mid-June, nearly 2 weeks earlier than normal. Spring moisture was adequate for seed germination, however warmer than normal conditions in late June coupled with lower than normal rainfall has stressed crops. Highlights of the 2012 June Acreage report follow: Michigan corn growers planted 2.6 million acres, up 100,000 acres from what was planted in 2011, and unchanged from the March Intentions report. Harvested acres of corn for grain are anticipated to be 2.29 million acres. U.S. corn planted area for all purposes in 2012 is estimated at 96.4 million acres, up 5 percent from last year and represents the highest planted acreage in the United States since 1937 when an estimated 97.2 million acres were planted. Growers expect to harvest 88.9 million acres for grain, up 6 percent from last year. Michigan soybean growers planted 2.0 million acres, up 50,000 acres from what was planted in 2011, and up 100,000 acres from the March Intentions report. U.S. soybean planted area for 2012 is estimated at 76.1 million acres, up 1 percent from last year, and is the third highest on record. Area for harvest, at 75.3 million acres, is up 2 percent from 2011.
