Johnson, Director Fruit Inventory Results for Grapes Results from the 2011 Michigan Fruit Survey have been compiled for grapes. There were 455 commercial grape farms at the end of the 2011 season, according to Jay Johnson, Director of the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. There were 15,000 acres of grapes at the conclusion of 2011, up 200 acres since 2006. There were 670 acres of grapes planted from 2007 through 2011. The top two counties in grape acres, Berrien and Van Buren, accounted for 82 percent of all acres. There were 1,450 acres of grapes in the northwest, nearly three times the area a decade earlier. The two most common varieties, which are used mainly for juice, were Concords and Niagaras. They were 83 percent of the total acres. The area in Vinifera grape vineyards rose to 1,765 acres, up from 1,270 acres five years earlier. Riesling was the most widely planted wine grape variety.
