Johnson, Director July Milk Production Dairy herds in Michigan produced 741 million pounds of milk during July, up 4.1 percent from a year ago, according to Jay Johnson, Director of the USDA, NASS, Michigan Field Office. The daily rate per cow was 63.5 pounds, up 0.8 pounds from 2011. The dairy herd was estimated at 376,000 head for July, up 10,000 from a year earlier. Milk production in the 23 major States during July totaled 15.5 billion pounds, up 0.8 percent from July 2011. The daily production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 58.9 pounds for July, up 0.2 pounds from July 2011. The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.50 million head, 41,000 head more than July 2011, but 7,000 head less than June 2012.
